Freedom of the City

Freedom to me seems to be an illusion. In our society; we need to go to school. It's illegal to not go to school. And why do we do it? So that we can be educated enough to get a good job, in order that we may make money, so that we can buy and upkeep a car, a house, and a family.

We call that "the good life". We go through the motions of going to school, getting a job, getting a family, retiring, and dying. And if you don't do all those things; there's something wrong with you.

And if I ever wanted to have a girlfriend, and ultimately a wife and a family, I have to have a job, and a car, and maybe a house, or it's impossible.

In a society where everyone is thought to be free, how could it possibly be that we actually have no choice in our lifestyle whatsoever?

There are societies around the world where clothing doesn't exist, money is unheard of, there are no jobs, no laws, and there is no rich and poor, there is only family.

Those people are truly free.

There are times where I wish I could just leave and go and live in the wild, in the bush, and really be free.

But of course that's impossible because the government owns all the land I could possibly live on, and it would be illegal to eat any meat or fruit that I might find in the bush because that would also belong to the government.

It's a truly messed-up world we live in when you cannot live anywhere unless you have purchased or rented the land.

But I don't consider the idea of having a job for the purpose of paying bills and mortgages to be living. I call it surviving, barely. And I certainly don't consider it to be freedom.

Freedom is truly living without burden, and without fear. Without the fear of being in debt, without the burden of paying bills and rent.

But even with societies that were once truly free, like the aboriginal Australians, "The Good Life" has taken over and ruined their freedom.

And with the Kalahari Bushmen, people that once knew nothing of society, are being brutally punished for killing animals they live on.

Perhaps there is nowhere in the world where one can be free from society and all the restrictions it brings.

Perhaps the idea of being free is merely a dream.
